“Vercors et mobilité” (Movement around Vercors): 1939-1945

Description

During the Second World War, contrary to popular belief, Vercors was not an air-tight stronghold. The flow of refugees from 1940, then the creation of the Maquis du Vercors and widespread mobilisation in June 1944 meant there was a lot of movement through this region, some official and some illegal.

It goes without saying that the mountain roads had a strategic role to play, from the “Plan Montagnard” to the final attack in July 1944. These routes were heavily damaged in battle and were rebuilt after the war.

Today, the roads are a key part of the history and memory of the Resistance in Vercors.
